Mexico keeps facing the challenge to meet ongoing demand for water agriculture, industry and the population. New innovative technologies and modernisations can offer solutions for the problem. These solutions can be partnering or investment opportunities for international companies in the water sector. Mexico is an valuable importer of solutions for the water sector because much of the advanced technology is not yet produced locally.
The water sector market in Mexico is expected to grow between 1.5% and 2% annually. The main water problems in Mexico are overexploitation, inadequate infrastructure, drought and pollution of water resources. The federal government is trying to modernise the country's infrastructure and better manage water management in urban, industrial and agricultural areas of the country. Mexico imports USD $4.1 billion worth of equipment and technology for the water sector annually with the US as the main foreign supplier. Thanks to the existing free trade agreement between the EU and Mexico, all technology related to water treatment can be imported tariff-free from Europe into Mexico.
